We’re all guilty of working too much on occasion. It’s absolutely inevitable if you have the drive to challenge yourself and succeed at all costs… and we all have that, right? I’ll be the first to admit sometimes my vision for success overshadows my need for rest. But just as being lazy won’t get you anywhere, overworking yourself can be just as bad.

How do we create that perfect balance between work and play? Well, if you’re like me, you probably have a small panic attack when you can’t access your phone at any given moment. Do you sleep with your phone by your pillow? E-mail during meetings? Rest your phone on your bathroom counter when showering? Don’t do it!

If I was stranded on a deserted island and could only take one item, it would be my iPhone. I wouldn’t even take it to call for help, but to make sure that I didn’t get behind on my e-mails. Don’t think you’re that addicted? Next time you’re sitting still, notice how often you instinctively reach to check your phone for missed alerts. Continue reading »

Realtor.net is all a buzz over how amazing QR codes are and how it will be a game changer in real estate.

Really? A game changer? That’s a stretch.

Is it part of the entire Technology 2.0 — smartphones, instant access and response, among the requirements — game changer? Of course. But it is a small piece, maybe the size of a … Well … QR code.

An agent told me, “I’m putting the QR code on my signs so people can find me.” Okay, let me get this straight, you’ve got a sign with (I assume) name, brokerage, phone number, and web address on it. But that new buyer is going to get that QR code. Sure, I’ll buy that.

Okay, so you put the QR code on your listings, great. I won’t call your 800 number or your text for more information hotline — but I’m going to get out my car, climb through the snow to take a picture of this alien-looking code on your sign. Sure, I’ll buy that.

Don’t get me wrong, QR codes could be a game changer in the logistics industry.

However, until we start shipping houses, QR codes will be just be a fun toy for those with more time than deals on their hands to enjoy.

Thousands of REALTORS® are making the choice, consciously and unconsciously, to add Lady Gaga, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Jimmy Buffett to their business plans.  In fact, Americans as a whole are consuming ringback tones as a personal and business medium to the tune of over $235 million in 2009 (BMI).

I don’t want to assume that everyone knows the term “ringback;” so, quickly, it’s what you hear when you are calling someone’s phone.  Usually it’s a popular song and shouldn’t be confused with a “ringtone” which is what you hear when your phone rings.

Ringbacks can either be a great connection point with a consumer/another agent or a kiss of death for your business.  If you want to personalize your phone this way in your business, move forth with caution.  I personally love ringbacks; so, please don’t hear me be all “yuck, yuck, unprofessional.”

Pros:

1.     You can really connect well with a demographic with the correct choice.  If you have a specific niche market, ringbacks can screen the correct demographic you want to reach.

2.     Ringbacks can place the caller in a better mood or relax them prior to your conversation.  When I’ve used ringbacks, DAILY I answered the phone and the caller was literally singing along.  After brief laughter, they always complimented my song choice, and we had a good 30 second chat about that commonality.

3.     They set a fun tone.  REALTORS® often get bum wraps as overly serious, negotiating freaks.  As you’re getting that call from your cooperating agent on a deal, it may just put them in the mood you need them to be in.

Cons:

1.     You may isolate a clientele.  I was calling a service provider recently, and he had “Margaritaville” on his ringback.  I immediately thought, “Me and this guy are not going to gel.”  I hung up and chose another service provider. Continue reading »
