From the first year I got my license as a college student, I knew I wanted to be involved in the real estate business as much as possible.  I started by attending the Iowa REALTORS® Legislative Bus-in where I quickly realized the power we as individuals have to take part in the political landscape that is our real estate industry. Real estate took a bit of a back seat while I finished my degree.  As I made my way back home to another market, I again jumped in full-force as an active member of the Iowa Great Lakes Board of REALTORS®.  After less than a year in my current market, I was elected secretary/treasury of our board.  Since taking office, I have been involved in many programs and organizations.

During my first trip to state meetings this past winter, I was immersed into the exciting culture of passionate real estate professionals from across the state who take an active role in their profession at the state and sometimes national level.  I quickly realized that we do have the power to interact, develop ideas, and implement strategies that affect not only our business, but the real estate industry for buyers and sellers.

After the energizing sessions we attended at the state level, I found myself asking, “Why doesn’t everyone want to attend these meetings?  If nothing else, why don’t more brokers attend to take back this valuable knowledge and experience to their agents?”  The president of our board responded quickly, “There are givers and there are takers.”  Continue reading »

It can be boring, spending a large amount of your weekends sitting or standing in what are sometimes vacant homes for hours on end.  For me, the value is developing strong communication and sales skills.  With a degree in communication studies, I still find myself learning and developing techniques to effectively communicate with clients while qualifying them at the same time.

It can be all too easy to greet people at the door and let them wander with the usual, “Let me know if you have any questions.”  I have found some specific tactics very useful and lucrative when used during my open homes.

I recently turned common Sunday lookers into buyers in two weeks time.  A couple came through one of my Sunday opens, they were pleasant and quiet as they made their way through the home.  They said they didn’t have any questions and were on their way out when I began to chat with them.  Simple things like, “How long have you been looking? Are you from the area?” These simple questions quickly snowballed into learning about their situation while developing a personal connection with them.

After getting a good feel about what they were looking for, I told them I would do some more searching and set up some showings that might be a good fit for them early in the coming week.  They were excited for the work that I was willing to do for them.  In two weeks time, Continue reading »

I strongly believe in the power of positive thinking and live by it everyday.  As a determined entrepreneur and recent graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, I am goal-oriented and envision my plans becoming a reality.  I work toward my goals each and everyday.

I have been in the business since 2009, but recently began a new chapter, bringing my business home to the resort community of Okoboji in North-West Iowa.  Excited about this new endeavor, I began marketing my diverse interests along with the areas both my office and I specialize in.

I began using the phrase “From country living to your back-yard beach, I’ve got you covered.”  No later than two days after this phrase was published in a local newspaper, I was contacted to co-list my first two area properties.  I was approached first to co-list a lakefront “Back-yard beach,” then later in the day to list an acreage “Country living.”  I couldn’t help but notice the strange relationship between the vision and words that I convey each day and the reality that I was creating.  I feel we play a critical role in the world we co-construct.

As I hit the pavement running on this new journey, I am focused on my physical actions as well as my mental motivation that help draw success in my direction.  I’m not saying that by envisioning yourself being successful it will just happen.  What I want to promote is an overall model of positive thinking and action combined to help propel your business and yourself in your desired direction.  In challenging times it is important to remember all things are possible as we have the true power to create our own reality.

I simply couldn’t wait two more years to graduate college before entering my dream career as a REALTOR®, so I didn’t.  I went active as a real estate agent in Cedar Falls Iowa in 2009.  Since entering the business, I have worked hard to manage my time.  With class, work on campus, activities and friends I was able to make time to schedule showings, and close deals in-between.  There are a lot of things I wish I knew before I got into the business; I mean this is hard work!  So I made a list of a few things I wish they told me about the real estate world in my weekend classes.

1. A real estate license doesn’t mean sales. Your office doesn’t just hand you over some magic list of names of people ready, willing and able to buy or sell.  You have to find them yourself.

2. Even if you are a part time agent, this is a full-time job. I didn’t realize between classes I would be on the phone with clients, offices, the abstract company, lenders and others while reviewing important documents on my Blackberry.

3. Starting a career in real estate is like starting your own company. I have quickly learned to be my own boss, marketing director, web master, public relations manager, and accountant while always working in research and development. Continue reading »
